After a few months into my training as an English teacher, it became clear that what my students really needed were speaking skills...
Yet, I was mainly learning how to teach grammar, reading, and writing.
It wasn't until I began tutoring that I could focus on helping people speak. And connect with others.
The looks of joy on people's faces as they told me about using in real life what I taught them and being understood were life-changing and inspiring. After all, their identities were connected to how they spoke.
Unlike teaching the other English skills, I was finally helping people feel intelligent, open doors to new opportunities, and improve their social lives by interacting with others.
This deep connection through speaking is transformative, and it is why I have dedicated over 25 years of my professional career in academics and beyond towards speaking effectively and confidently.
The Speaking Fluently Learning Lab takes you through a process of understanding fluency so that you can speak more fluently in your life and its specific speaking situations.
Fluency is a concept that many English teachers don't actually understand! Take it from me, I've trained novice English teachers for years and have attended international conferences on teaching English with experienced teachers, and there is a lot of misunderstanding.
When you know what fluency is--and is not--as well as why it is important, you can more easily work towards your goal.
There are some simple ways that you can measure and analyze your speaking for fluency. When you know where you are having difficulty, you can focus on those problem areas to save time.
When you struggle to speak, it is often because you need a little longer to think. There are specific strategies that you can adopt that will help you buy time to think and be better understood when you speak. Try them, practice them, and measure your progress!
I always tell my clients that "Practice Makes Fluent." The way you practice determines how quickly you will become fluent. That's why you need to practice self-monitoring and buying time in efficient and relevant ways that are fun and effective.

Dr. Lara Wallace is my preferred English teacher.
She has the ability to teach the English language in a very engaging way helping you to break down the barriers that any non-English mother tongue encounters before being able to express himself with a certain mastery of language.

Day 2: Review Day 1 of the Learning Lab in the workbook. Complete the exercises and "homework." Understand what contributes to fluency. Discover which factors influence your fluency.
Day 3: Watch the video from Day 2 of the Learning Lab. Consider the "homework" so you can begin assessing your fluency. Learn hesitation and self-correction techniques to be understood without sounding too slow.
Day 4: Review Day 2 of the Learning Lab in the workbook. Complete the exercises and "homework." Identify any specific difficulties you have with fluency so that you know where to focus moving forward.
Day 5: Watch the video from Day 3 of the Learning Lab. Consider the "homework." Learn how to measure your progress and how to buy time to think when speaking.
Days 6-10: Review Day 3 of the Learning Lab in the workbook. Complete the exercises and "homework." Begin a habit of buying time to think daily so that these practices become automatic.
