Whether you are searching for new challenges, up for a promotion, or are forced to find a new position, making a positive impression during the interview is essential.
You want to be ready.
And while your experiences and connections can get your foot in the door to the next opportunity, your communication skills will determine whether you get the job.
But are you ready for the interview?
Many people spend time practicing the wrong things before job interviews, and because of it, they become so nervous that their minds go blank.
Yet, you know that you can do well if you prepare well.
At the very least, you need to practice your interviewing skills with someone who will give you honest feedback.
Someone who can point to what you did well, and what you need to do better to make a positive impression.
Someone who understands the fine points of public speaking and communication, who can give you actionable advice.
You'll want a list of a few key points to practice as you go into your interview.
But without a practice interview, you won't know until the interview itself whether you can effectively speak for yourself.
Self-doubt will creep in.
You'll regret that you didn't have a dress rehearsal before your performance, a scrimmage before game day.
So, what can you do to make the most of your time before your interview?
You know that practicing answers to potential interview questions is not enough.
And with so little time to prepare for the interview, you need to know what to prioritize so that you can communicate your answers confidently.
You want to practice timing, body language, and tone of voice.
And you need personalized feedback to know which small adjustments to your delivery will make the most difference.
That's why you should sign up for a Mock Job Interview and Feedback.
Before your mock interview, you'll receive a message to your inbox asking for relevant details of your upcoming interview.
You can schedule your mock interview after replying with these details.
Dr. Lara Wallace, an experienced interviewer, will prepare questions relevant to the circumstances and position of your interview, role playing the interviewer.
The mock job interview simulation begins the moment you connect to the recorded video meeting over Zoom, and will go for the agreed upon length of time.
Once the interview is over, you and Lara will discuss what you did well and what to improve.
Lara will coach you briefly in some of these areas as time permits.
Afterward, you will receive a link to the recording so that you can form your own impression of your performance, and review any of the tips Lara shared.
The Mock Job Interview & Feedback consultation will help you feel prepared and know what to practice so that you can land your next job.

"I practiced in real time answering questions so Dr. Wallace could give me feedback about my responses with the STAR methodology, and the 4-step process for effective answers. She also told how to improve my pronunciation. The most impactful thing for me was that she helped me with were my physical expressions because it allowed me to have better eye contact in front of the camera and to connect with the interviewers as in a normal conversation. I landed the job!"

"I got invited for a Zoom interview with a highly reputed institute in my field. As a non-native English speaker determined to perform at my best, I sought guidance from my long-time trusted teacher and coach, Dr. Lara Wallace. As expected, she dedicated time to understanding the details of the position, identifying the gaps between my preparation and the institute’s expectations, and developing a practical, personalized plan to enhance my communication skills. Beyond the scheduled coaching hours, she checked in to ensure I was practicing the PQ® exercises she recommended to build natural confidence and focus. During the mock interview, she asked targeted questions to help me prepare and pinpoint specific terms and phrases I needed to refine. I will carry forward her positive energy and step-by-step guidance to improve my performance beyond this one interview."

But what happens when people working in multinational organizations are unprepared to communicate?
There are many new jobs in sustainability-related industries, both remote positions and in multinational companies and organizations. These are the people who are bringing about the badly needed green transition. It’s time for people from all over the world to amplify their voices, influence, and income through these opportunities to advance climate solutions, protect the environment, and repair the soil.
What do these jobs have in common? English. It is the most broadly spoken language among multinational organizations in the sustainability sector. Without strong speaking skills and the willingness to use them, your speaking opportunities will be limited.
That's why Dr. Lara Wallace began English for Sustainability in 2020--to help people communicate more effectively and confidently. Through her content, courses, and coaching, she has helped her clients perform confidently in presentations, make themselves understood when collaborating on multinational teams, earn promotions, and more.
With over 5 years of focusing on sustainability professionals and enthusiasts and nearly 20 years of experience teaching graduate students at the university level to communicate effectively for a variety of audiences--including in job interviews-- through speaking, presenting, and technical writing, her expertise in pronunciation pedagogy allows her to pinpoint and address communication barriers that clients can overcome by following a systematic approach that is immediately applicable to doing well in your job interview.
Lara is dedicated to empowering you to speak up for yourself, your community, and the planet.

I particularly appreciated Lara’s feedback on my pronunciation and the tips for structuring answers rather than memorizing a script. Between the mock interview and taking the Job Interview Preparation course, I landed a job!

Frequently Asked Questions
Dr. Lara Wallace has nearly 20 years of experience helping people express themselves effectively for interviews, and can easily identify what you can do to improve, giving you actionable advice on how to do it--especially if English is not your first language. While there are many people who can help you improve your answers, few can articulate what you should do with your voice when it comes to the subtle meanings of rhythm and intonation or the technical aspects of pronouncing different sounds. While there are some interesting AI-based apps out there, none are able to accurately give you feedback on how to use your voice strategically. Instead, they are limited to counting your "um" filler words and telling you if you are rambling. They cannot help you reduce your fillers or help you get to the point.
Yes, you can do that. Let Lara know how much more time you will like and she will send you the right calendar link along with a quote.
Practicing your job interview with another person before the real deal can help you understand how you might behave under pressure, unlike when you are running your answers alone. You will practice speaking aloud. You will get feedback on what your body language and tone of voice are communicating, regardless of what you actually say. Mock Job Interviews serve the same purposes as dress rehearsals for performers and scrimmage games for soccer players and other athletes: you get the full body experience and pressure to perform in a safe space before the real thing so that you go into the interview more familiar with yourself and the situation, and with tools to help you do your best.
While job interviews are the most common, we can practice interviews for scholarships, internships, pod casts, news stories, and more. All you need to share is who or which organization will interview you, for what purpose, and any description of that organization's mission. For example, if you are interviewing for a competitive scholarship (e.g., a Fulbright scholarship), please share the description of the scholarship and application procedure, as well as your own application so that Lara can prepare effectively.
While communication is crucial, whether you are offered the position depends on variables out of English for Sustainability's control. Some of them include: how qualified you are, how truthfully and effectively you represented yourself and your skills, the other applicants and their qualifications, applicants' connections to the interviewers, funding for and availability of the position, legislation that may affect the position, leadership in the organization, discrimination, and more. This consultation will help give you your best chance at effective communication, but cannot guarantee that you will land the job.
It is normal and natural to be nervous in a job interview, especially if speaking another language! In other words, you are not alone.
This consultation is designed to help you practice effectively so that you can be more familiar with interviews and know what else to practice ahead of time.
And if you're a perfectionist, know that it is better to speak and make mistakes than to miss out on practice.
The best way to overcome shyness and nervousness is by practicing.
Just remember–practice makes fluent. Everything gets easier with practice and experience–especially speaking.
Yes! If they impede an interviewer's ability to understand what you said, Lara can briefly coach you or answer your questions on the call.
Once you reply to Lara's message with your job description and other relevant data, you will receive a link to schedule your Mock Job Interview & Feedback consultation. The session will be over Zoom and will be recorded. You will get access to the recording and chat to download for yourself within 48 hours. Lara will craft interview questions based on the job description, and will inform herself about the company for which you are applying to make it as realistic of an experience as possible.
